The Clarence Derwent Awards are theatre awards given annually by the Actors' Equity Association on Broadway in the United States and by Equity, the performers union, in the West End in the United Kingdom.
Clarence Derwent was a London-born actor, director and manager who was President of America's Actors' Equity 1946 – 1952. His will stipulated that two five-hundred-dollar prizes were to be given out annually to the best individual male and female supporting performances on Broadway and a £100 prize to the best supporting performances in the West End. However, he wanted to see the awards given out, and they were thus started in America in 1945 and in the UK in 1948. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) is an American labor union representing over 120,000 film and television principal performers and background performers worldwide. According to SAG's Mission Statement, the Guild seeks to: negotiate and enforce collective bargaining agreements that establish equitable levels of compensation, benefits, and working conditions for its performers; collect compensation for exploitation of recorded performances by its members, and provide protection against unauthorized use of those performances; and preserve and expand work opportunities for its members.
The Guild was founded in 1933 in an effort to eliminate exploitation of actors in Hollywood who were being forced into oppressive multi-year contracts with the major movie studios that did not include restrictions on work hours or minimum rest periods, and often had clauses that automatically renewed at the studios' discretion. These contracts were notorious for allowing the studios to dictate the public and private lives of the performers who signed them, and most did not have provisions to allow the performer to end the deal.
The Screen Actors Guild is associated with the Associated Actors and Artistes of America (AAAA), which is the primary association of performer's unions in the United States. The AAAA is affiliated with the AFL-CIO. SAG claims exclusive jurisdiction over motion picture performances, and shares jurisdiction of radio, television, Internet, and other new media with its sister union AFTRA, with which it shares 44,000 dual members.
In addition to its main offices in Hollywood, SAG also maintains local branches in several major US cities, including: Phoenix, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Nashville, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Detroit, Denver, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Honolulu, and San Francisco.
Since 1995, the guild has annually awarded the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which are considered an indicator of success at the Academy Awards.

Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) is located Islamabad, Pakistan. PFUJ is arguably South Asia’s first association representing the journalists of an entire country. To its credit, in the 50-odd years since its inception it has always stood out as a symbol of freedom of speech. The battles it waged for press freedom and for a democratic dispensation in the country will always remain etched in the collective memory of Pakistanis.
To this day, PFUJ remains committed to the ideals for which it was established in 1950. Set up primarily to work towards a better working environment for Pakistani journalists, it didn’t remain isolated from the struggles and campaigns launched by the civil society. In fact, it was in the vanguard whenever sacrifices needed to be made and freedoms were to be won.
PFUJ’s constitution was adopted at the Pakistan Working Journalists Convention, which was held in Karachi in April 1950. Delegates from home as well as from abroad took part in the event which paved the ground for the establishment of PFUJ. The historic event was opened by the-then foreign minister of the country, Muhammad Zafrulla Khan.
The inauguration of the convention was witnessed by newsmen from the Delhi Union of Journalists, besides some federal ministers and members of the diplomatic corps. Prominent among the delegates participating in the deliberations were those belonging to the Sindh Union of Journalists and the Punjab Union of Journalists, thus earning the distinction of laying down PFUJ’s foundation.
The Frontier Union of Journalists, which couldn’t send a delegate in time, declared its willingness to accept the document adopted at the convention. The draft constitution had been drawn up by our senior colleagues belonging to the Sindh Union of Journalists.
According to one of its articles, PFUJ was to come into existence the very day its constitution was ratified by the last of its constituent bodies. This happened on Aug 2, 1950, thus opening a new chapter in the history of journalism in Pakistan.
As per its constitution, PFUJ was to work towards the betterment of the economic conditions of journalists. It was also tasked with the onerous responsibility of creating conditions in which the media could work without coercion and intimidation.
PFUJ is an affiliated member of the International Federation of Journalists.
