The Albanian Armed Forces (AAF) (FASH) is the armed forces of Albania, first formed after independence in 1912. Today it is made up of the General Staff Headquarters, the Albanian Joint Forces Command, the Albanian Support Command and the Albanian Training and Doctrine Command.

The Albanian Joint Forces Command Headquarter is situated in Durrës. This Command includes all the Operational Forces of the Albanian Navy Brigade, the Albanian Air Brigade, an Infantry Rapid Reaction Brigade plus a Commando Regiment, and the Area Support Brigade.

The Albanian Army is mostly supported by the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, United Kingdom, Turkey, Switzerland, Denmark and Belgium.

Since the last years and after several major re-equipment programs, the Albanian Armed Forces launched a 10-year reform program sponsored and supervised by the U.S. Department of Defense to become technologically advanced and fully professional by 2010. The new military is expected to consist of about 14,500 troops, trained to NATO standards. http://www.setimes.com/cocoon/setimes/xhtml/en_GB/features/setimes/features/2008/08/21/feature-03.

The Albanian Naval Defence Forces () are the naval branch of the Albanian military. Their name was changed from the Coastal Defense Command of the Albanian Army in 1996. With the new structure the naval forces are regrouped in the Albanian Navy Brigade under the Albanian Joint Forces Command. The Albanian Navy Brigade Headquarters is located in Durrës, and operates 2 bases. One in Durrës (Kepi i Palit base) and one in Vlora, Pashaliman base. The vessels of the Albanian Navy Brigade are comprised mostly of patrol craft and support craft, most of which are donated from Italy and USA. Former Soviet or Chinese boats have been retired from service. Only 2 Soviet built minesweepers remain still in service, until the arrival of 4 big patrol boats Damen Stan Type 4207 from the Netherlands. The Navy performs mainly Coast Guard duties, based on the concept of One Force two Missions. The legal framework has been updated in order to facilitate these missions and EU - NATO integration. Turkey and Greece are also assisting Albania in a common effort to modernize the actual Naval Academy and rebuild the repair facilities in Pashaliman district.

[Up] Eddie Romero

Eddie Romero (born July 7, 1924) is an acclaimed and influential Filipino film director, film producer and screenwriter, considered one of the finest in the Cinema of the Philippines. Romero was named National Artist of the Philippines in 2003.

His career spans three generations of filmmakers. His 1976 film "Ganito Kami Noon…Paano Kayo Ngayon?," set at the turn of the century during the revolution against the Spaniards and, later, the American colonizers, follows a naïve peasant through his leap of faith to become a member of an imagined community.

"Agila" situates a family’s story against the backdrop of the country’s history.

"Kamakalawa" explores the folklore of prehistoric Philippines.

"Banta ng Kahapon," his 'small' political film, is set against the turmoil of the late 1960s, tracing the connection of the underworld to the corrupt halls of politics.

His 13-part series of "Noli Me Tangere" brings Philippine national hero Jose Rizal’s novel to a new generation of viewers.

Romero's films, the National Artist citation states, "are delivered in an utterly simple style – minimalist, but never empty, always calculated, precise and functional, but never predictable."

[Up] Simon Gjoni

Simon Gjoni (1926 – 1991) was an Albanian composer of many popular pieces for piano and orchestra.

Gjoni was born in the city of Shkodër, Albania. He was educated in a rank and file urban family and graduated from the "Illyricum" High School of the city. Very soon he learned to play guitar, trombone, the piano and devoted himself with enthusiasm and passion to the art of music. In the years of his youth, he composed over 200 original songs, which were immediately sang in the city of Shkodër and were spread all over Albania, such as "Lule Bore" (English: Snow-Flower), "Syte e tu si drite" (English: Your Eyes Like Light), "Weaving girl".

He completed his studies over the years 1952–1958 in the "Musical Knowledge Academy of Prague" (Czechoslovakia). During the years 1956-1958 in the city of Prague, he conducted: Schubert "Rosamunda", Grieg "Peer Gynt", I. Benda "Pygmalion", K. Dittersdorff "Concert symphony for violin and contrabass", F. Liszt "Les Preludes". In the year 1958 he returned home and worked for the Opera and Ballet Theatre in Tirana, where he conducted many worldwide renowned works, which were interpreted for the first time in Albania. Such works were: G. Donixetti "Don Pasquale", L. Cavallo "Pagliaccio", G. Rossini "The Barber of Seville", T. Daija "The Spring" and the ballets Vasilienko "Lola", Krein "Laurencia". Under his care and passion, he recorded many works of the Albanian composers: Zadeja, Gaci, Nova, Daija, Harapi, Pjetër Dungu, Grimci, Kono etc, and the music of some Albanian films. In 1967, he conducted in China works by Albanian composers. Gjoni was also one of the founders of the Symphonic Orchestra of the Albanian Radio-Television. He worked persistently and with discipline for the establishment and growth of that group.

He started teaching in 1958 at the Artistic Lyceum and later in 1961 was among the first lecturers in founding the State Conservatory of Tirana (currently the Academy of Fine Arts), where he prepared whole generations of musicians and artists, teaching the subjects of polyphony, orchestration, conducting, intonation and chamber music, till the day he died.

His activity as a composer has passed through all genres from the song, romance, cantata, suite, ballads, works for piano, clarinet, violin and major orchestral works such as: Symphonic dances, Symphonic poems, Symphonic Suite up to Symphony in Mib.

S. Gjoni is a composer with a noble inspiration and pathos, the music flows freely. The critic of music and the musicologist George Leotsakos, in his letter dated 22 December 1991 characterizes him as follows: "Simon Gjoni was an excellent composer, a predestined creator, with a profound aesthetic and musical culture, but above all with a marvelous human personality, with a golden heart in harmony with his refined culture."

Likewise, in the field of musical critique, he has left numerous theoretical works, related to the Albanian musical art and his work "The Instruments and the Art of Orchestration".

In the newspaper "Drita" dated 1 December 1991, the composer Çesk Zadeja writes: "The name of Simon Gjoni will remain graven in the pentagram of the Albanian music. The highest assessment for each creator is then when his work (his message) has its repercussion in the profundity of the time, increasing its values along as the time passes by. These features are attributed to the talented artist, composer, conductor, lecturer and musicologist Simon Gjoni".

[Up] Rambo Amadeus

Rambo Amadeus (Serbian Cyrillic: Рамбо Амадеус, born June 14, 1963 in Kotor, Montenegro, former Yugoslavia) is the stage name of the Belgrade-based Montenegrin singer-songwriter Antonije Pušić, popular all over the former Yugoslavia. A self-titled "musician, poet, and media manipulator" continues to be one of the most interesting phenomena on music scene(s) of the former Yugoslavia.

His songs combine satirical lyrics on the nature of common people and silliness of local politics. He uses a mixture of musical styles including jazz and Rock (converging towards drum and bass lately), and self-conscious ironic wit (for example, one of his aliases is "Rambo Amadeus Svjetski Mega Car" (RASMC) — "Rambo Amadeus World Mega Tzar"). His stage name itself is made from John Rambo and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Known also as a "charming king of jovial pop", his concerts are never mere repetitions of recorded songs, but a mixture of musical improvisation and humor exploiting all aspects of human nature in a crude manner. Some fans compare his style and career path with those of Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart.
