This is a list of the municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil.
Canoas, which won city status in 1939, is the fourth largest city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Its population is over 300,000 people. The city is adjacent to the capital of the gaúcho state: Porto Alegre. Canoas is the center of some important industries and the Canoas Air Base, used by the Brazilian Air Force.
According to the IBGE, Brazil's Geography and Statistics Institute, Canoas currently has no rural areas, but it started as a village of large landowners. The first of them was conquistador Francisco Pinto Bandeira, who received from the Portuguese Crown, in 1740, an area north of the Gravataí River.
History has that 1871 was the beginning of the village of Canoas, when the first section of the railway that would link Porto Alegre to São Leopoldo was inaugurated. Canoas was then part of the municipalities of Gravataí and São Sebastião do Caí. Soon large farms would lose space to small properties.
After obtaining city status, Canoas experienced rapid growth, especially after 1945. Today, many call it a "cidade-dormitório" (Portuguese for "bedroom city"), because thousands of people commute to neighboring Porto Alegre to work, as happens with all cities in the greater Porto Alegre metropolitan area.
Esteio is a town located in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, the state capital. About 9.3 miles from Porto Alegre, and neighboring Canoas and Sapucaia do Sul, it has about 87,000 inhabitants. Esteio is best known for being the place where is located the Expointer, one of the most important agriculture/farming fairs of South America.

Matte U, Le Roux MG, Bénichou B, Moisan JP, Giugliani R.</ref>
The notorious Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, who had conducted twin studies in Germany, is known to have fled to South America as the Allies were closing in on the Nazi German regime. The Argentinian historian Jorge Camarasa has put forward the theory that Mengele conducted experiments on women in the area, which could be responsible for the high ratio of twins. About the time of Mengele's arrival in southern Brazil in 1963, the incidence of twins began to increase, leading to the current rate of twinning at 1 in 10, over half of whom are dizygotic (fraternal).<ref name="Study"/><ref name="NYTimes"></ref> However, such speculation has been disputed by local historian, Paulo Sauthier, who says Mengele didn't study twins during his time in Brazil. Moreover, according to geneticists, the most likely explanation for the high frequency of twins is genetic isolation and inbreeding.<ref name="Study"/><ref name="NYTimes"/>

The economy depends primarily on the mining industry. Caçapava do Sul produces 80% of the calcareous rock mined in Rio Grande do Sul. For many years it was Brazil's major producer of copper and is still an important center of copper mining.
A major deposit of copper ore was discovered in the 1940s by the CBC (Companhia Brasileira do Cobre / Brazilian Copper Company), under the direction of Brazilian industrialist and famous playboy Francisco "Baby" Pignatari. The area, about 5 kilometers from Caçapava, came to be known as the Minas do Camaquã (Camaquã Mines). This large operation contributed enormously to the town's economy and is still the site of operating copper mines, by such companies as Majestic Diamonds & Metals.
The area is one of great natural beauty, with several interesting natural formations. Nearby lies Pedra do Segredo (Stone of the Secret), a famous natural outcropping of stone that attracts mountain climbers and tourists from all over the state and elsewhere.

This article is about the Brazilian city. For the homonymous river (Arroio Chuí or Arroyo Chuy), where Brazil's southernmost point is located, see Chuí River. For the twin Uruguayan city, see Chuy.
Chuí is a city located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A border town, it shares its name with sister city Chuy, Uruguay. The two cities are contiguous and separated only by a street border, the Avenida Internacional, a situation also seen in a few other Brazilian border points, such as between Santana do Livramento (Brazil) and Rivera (Uruguay).
Formerly a village under the jurisdiction of Santa Vitória do Palmar, Chuí became the southernmost city in Brazil in 1997, when it seceded from that other municipality. It is very close to Brazil's southernmost point, which is located on a bend of the homonymous river just before its mouth on the Atlantic Ocean, near the hamlet of Barra do Chuí. However, both the hamlet and the extreme point itself remained in the territory of Santa Vitória do Palmar after Chuí seceded. Still, Chuí holds the title of the southernmost urban seat of a municipality in Brazil. Its counterparts in the North, West and East are respectively Uiramutã, state of Roraima; Mâncio Lima, Acre; and João Pessoa, Paraíba.
The name "Chuí" (really meaning the Arroio Chuí, a small river that crosses the municipality) is mentioned in the widespread Brazilian Portuguese expression "do Oiapoque ao Chuí" ("from the Oiapoque to the Chuí [rivers]"), referring to the fact that the mouths of these rivers are commonly thought to be the country's two extreme points in the North and South. Actually, they are only the extremities of the Brazilian coast. The saying has approximately the same meaning as the American expression "from coast to coast" - i.e., it is used to refer to something that encompasses the whole country.
The city of Chuí has a considerable community of Palestinian immigrants.
