There are 44 rivers in Kerala, all but three originating in the Western Ghats.
The following is a list of the westward-flowing rivers of Kerala state in southern India, in order of length, and their tributaries. These rivers all originate in the Western Ghats range and flow westward into the Kerala Backwaters or into the Arabian Sea. Length in kilometers is in parentheses.
Three rivers, the Kabani, Bhavani and Pambar rise in Kerala and flow eastwards, Kabini into Karnataka and the other two into Tamil Nadu.

The Periyar River is the longest river in the state of Kerala, India, with a length of 244 km. The river is also known as The lifeline of Kerala as it is one of the few perennial rivers of Kerala. It provides drinking water for major towns.<ref name="idukki"></ref>
The Idukki Dam has been built across the river and generates a significant proportion of electrical power for the state. This is a concrete, double curvature parabolic, thin arc dam.

Vaigai Dam is built across the Vaigai River near Andipatti, in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, southern India. It provides water for irrigation for the Madurai district and the Dindigul district as well as drinking water to Madurai and Andipatti. Near the dam the Government of Tamil Nadu has constructed the Agricultural Research Station for researching the growing of a variety of crops, including rice, sorghum, blackgram, cowpea and cotton.

Kalpathipuzha River is one of the main tributaries of the Bharathapuzha River, the second-longest river in Kerala, south India.
The Kalpathipuzha originates in the upper slopes of the Western Ghats deep inside Palakkad district from the place called Chenthamarakulam in the hills, north of Walayar. It is formed from the confluence of four streams, namely Malampuzha, Walayar, Korayar and Varattar. The Malampuzha Dam is built across this river just before it enters Palakkad town. The river is named after the Kalpathi Siva temple in Palakkad town.
One of the problem faced by Kalpathypuzha, like most other rivers in Kerala, is illegal sand mining. This has left many pits in the river bed which lead to shrub growth. During summer the river is covered by a green carpet of Water Hyacinth and other shrubs.
Gayathripuzha River is one of the main tributaries of the Bharathapuzha River, the second-longest river in Kerala, south India. It originates from Anaimalai hills, passes through Kollengode, Nanmara, Alathur, Wadakanchery and Pazhayannur before joining the Bharathapuzha at Mayannur.

The river has a total annual yield of 2349 million cubic metre and an annual utilizable yield of 1110 million cubic metre. The river has 38 tributaries including major and minor ones. The river has 47 sub watersheds and 114 micro watersheds.
Chaliyar River is the fourth longest river in Kerala at 169 km in length. The Chaliyar river is also known as Beypore River as it nears the sea. Nilambur, Edavanna, Areekode,Kizhuparamba, Cheruvadi, Mavoor, Peruvayal, Feroke, and Beypore are some of the towns/villages situated along the banks of Chaliyar River.
Meenachil is the name of the north-eastern region of Kottayam district in Kerala, south India. Palai is the main town in Meenachil. The arterial river of the district is also named Meenachil. The river finds mention in Arundhati Roy's Booker Prize winning novel, The God of Small Things.
The river Meenachil, also known as Kavanar, originates in the Western Ghats of Kerala, flows westward through Erattupetta, Palai, Kidangoor, Ettumanoor and Kottayam. Near Kottayam it splits into a number of distributaries before emptying into the Vembanad Lake. Kumarakom, the bird sanctuary and tourist resort is on one such branch.

Walayar is a small town in the border between Kerala and Tamilnadu on NH 47 where the sales tax ,motor vehicles check post&Excise check posts are located. Due to the high traffic on this route (most of the goods import into Kerala happens through road and predominantly through this road), the place has also become notorious for the traffic jams.Lot of passenger vehicles coming from other states including buses with tourists and pilgrims are coming to the state through this gateway. Traffic block is very acute during sabarimala season. Walayar is surrounded by some picturesque spots notable for photography. Walayar is a place where you can refresh yourself when you are on the way to Kerala. It has few hotels and lodging facilities. Walayar has a railway station which is about 100 meters away from NH 47. Moreover, walayar is good place to hangout or freakout a bit with the dam, green lands, roadside tea, etc. Walayar has become a famous little town due to the presence of the Sales Tax Check post (one of the 10 biggest check posts in India ) and Malabar Cements . There is also a Deer Park located beside the NH47 which presently now in a poor condition due to lack of facilitation.
The RTO Check post located in Walayar is the biggest one in Kerala. In terms of revenue to the state, also it stands in the first position.

Malampuzha River is one of the tributaries of the river Kalpathipuzha. Malampuzha Dam is built across the river at Malampuzha about 8 km from the Palakkad town in the Indian state of Kerala. The reservoir formed by the Malampuzha Dam is 23.13 square kilometres in area and is the second largest reservoir in Kerala after the Idukki reservoir.
