The Kabul University is located in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan. It was founded in 1931 but officially opened for classes in 1932. Kabul University is currently attended by approximately 7,000 students, of which 1,700 are females. The university is still recovering from the long period of war and chaos in the country. The main building was rebuilt about 500 meters from the old one, which has almost the same design.
Kabul University consists of 14 faculties in fields of Agriculture, Economics, Pharmacy, Islamic Studies, Law, Language and Literature, Science, Engineering, Journalism, Veterinary medicine, Social Science, Psychology, Geoscience and Fine Arts.
Herāt University () is located in the city of Herat, capital of Herat province, in western Afghanistan.
Kandahar University (Pashto: د کندهار پوهنتون) is a government funded higher learning institution in Kandahar, Afghanistan. It is one of two universities in southern Afghanistan. Kandahar University (KU) was established in 1991, at a time when the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) was in power under President Mohammad Najibullah. Dr. Tooryalai Wesa, who returned to the country after 13 years and is the current governor of Kandahar province, was the first Chancellor of Kandahar University. It is believed that he will help in the development and progress of the University.
Kandahar Uiversity provides areas of study in Agriculture, Medicine, Engineering and Education. The University has future plans to launch faculties in the fields of Economy, Computer Science and Islamic Studies. The institution currently has an enrollment of 1,124+ students with a dominant number of male students. KU enrolls around 280 students each year in different majors through an entrance exam directly under control of the Ministry of Higher Edcuation of Afghanistan.
Kabul Polytechnic is a university located in Kabul, Afghanistan and was established in 1963 in Karte Mamourin area beside the Intercontinental Hotel. The university has three faculties with 19 sub-departments, including 11 professional and 8 general subject departments.
In June 2002, the first government of Afghanistan was formed by the Loya Jirga which took place at a tent on the campus of the Polytechnical University. The tent was especially built for housing the gathering of the 1500 representatives.

Nangarhar University was established in 1962 as a medical collegehttp://www.amse.net/Research_2003_ZarjonBaha.html AMSE. International : Research Papers, it was later merged with other local colleges to become a full-fledged university. It now houses faculties in agriculture, engineering, education, medicine, theology, pedagogy, political science and veterinary medicine.
Nangarhar consists of many faculties including engineering, political science, economics, teachers' training, veterinary, and computer science. Nangarhar Medical Faculty (NMF) is the second largest medical school in Afghanistan.
University of Nangarhar faces problems such as lack of facilities and professional teachers. There are no educational scholarships for the students to study abroad.
Balkh University () is located in Mazari Sharif, capital of Balkh province, in northern Afghanistan. Established in 1986, the university currently has about 4000 students and is the second largest in Afghanistan after Kabul University. The United States and Germany, which leads ISAF in Balkh, have recently announced in Jan 2009 an expansion of Balkh University at a cost of more than 300 million dollars.
The National Military Academy of Afghanistan (NMAA) () is an academic institution of the Afghan military that is located in Kabul, Afghanistan. It is a four-year military development institution dedicated to graduating officers for the Afghan National Army and the Afghan National Air Corps. The mission of the NMAA academy is to produce officers for the Afghan National Army that also have a four year college level bachelors degree. The academy is based upon the United States Military Academy at West Point.
