[Up] ROTAP

Rare or Threatened Australian Plants, usually abbreviated to ROTAP, is a list of rare or threatened Australian plant taxa. Developed and maintained by the CSIRO, the most recent edition lists 5031 taxa. The list uses a binary coding system based on the IUCN Red List categories for "Presumed Extinct", "Endangered", "Vulnerable", "Rare" or "Poorly Known". However, it also provides for additional information such as geographic range and occurrence in protected areas.

It was first compiled in 1979, and published in 1981, with revisions published in 1988 and 1996. In its early days it was the only nationally recognised list of threatened plants, although it had no legal status. When the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 was proclaimed, the ROTAP list was used as a basis for the publication of schedules to the Act. A third list was produced by ANZECC from 1996. In 2000, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) was proclaimed. This superseded the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992, and published a single list of threatened flora which largely superseded the three lists then current. As the EPBC list has legal force, the ROTAP list is now little used. It continues to be maintained, however, and is often used and referred to in scientific publications.

[Up] Declared Rare and Priority Flora List

The Declared Rare and Priority Flora List is the system by which Western Australia's conservation flora are given a priority. Developed by the Government of Western Australia's Department of Environment and Conservation, it is used extensively within the department, including the Western Australian Herbarium. The herbarium's journal, Nuytsia, which has published over a quarter of the state's conservation taxa, requires a conservation status to be included in all publications of new Western Australian taxa that appear to be rare or endangered.

The system defines six levels of priority taxa: ;X<nowiki>:</nowiki> Declared Rare Flora — Presumed Extinct Taxa: These are taxa that thought to be extinct, either because they have not been collected for over 50 years despite through searching, or because all known wild populated are have been destroyed. They have been declared as such in accordance with the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950, and are therefore afforded legislative protection under that act. ;R<nowiki>:</nowiki> Declared Rare Flora — Extant Taxa: These are taxa that have been thoroughly surveyed, and determined to be rare, in danger of extinction, or otherwise in need of special protection. They have been declared rare in accordance with the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950, and are therefore afforded legislative protection under that act. ;P1<nowiki>:</nowiki> Priority One — Poorly Known Taxa: These are taxa that are known from only a few (generally less than five) populations, all of which are under immediate threat. They are candidates for declaration as rare flora, but are in need of further survey. ;P2<nowiki>:</nowiki> Priority Two — Poorly Known Taxa: These are taxa that are known from only a few (generally less than five) populations, some of which are not thought to be under immediate threat. They are candidates for declaration as rare flora, but are in need of further survey. ;P3<nowiki>:</nowiki> Priority Three — Poorly Known Taxa: That are taxa that are known from several populations, some of which are not thought to be under immediate threat. They are candidates for declaration as rare flora, but are in need of further survey. ;P4<nowiki>:</nowiki> Priority Four — Rare Taxa: These are taxa that have been adequately surveyed, and are rare but not known to be under threat.

[Up] List of threatened flora of Australia

The list of threatened flora of Australia includes all plant species listed as critically endangered or endangered in Australia under the EPBC Act.

[Up] FloraBase

FloraBase is a public access web-based database of the flora of Western Australia. It provides authoritative scientific information on 12,978 taxa, including descriptions, maps, images, conservation status and nomenclatural details. 1,272 alien taxa (naturalised weeds) are also recorded.

The system takes data from a number of datasets including the Census of Western Australian Plants and the Western Australian Herbarium specimen database of nearly 650,000 vouchered plant collections. It is operated by the Western Australian Herbarium within the Department of Environment and Conservation. It was established in November 1998 by Alex Chapman, a research scientist and botanist working in the Herbarium.

[Up] Western Australian Herbarium

The Western Australian Herbarium is the State Herbarium in Perth, Western Australia, Western Australia. It is part of the State government's Department of Environment and Conservation, and has responsibility for the description and documentation of the flora of Western Australia.<ref name="Herbarium home page"></ref>

The Herbarium is linked to the Regional Herbaria Network - which links approximately 84 regional community groups which have local reference collections.

In 2000, with the Wildflower Society of Western Australia, CALM, and the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority it published the The Western Australian Flora - A Descriptive Catalogue.

[Up] Melaleuca

Melaleuca is a genus of plants in the myrtle family Myrtaceae. There are well over 200 recognized species, most of which are endemic to Australia.<ref name=Craven/> A few species occur in Malesia and 7 species are endemic to New Caledonia.<ref name=Craven></ref><ref name=Endémía></ref> The species are shrubs and trees growing (depending on species) to 2–30 m tall, often with flaky, exfoliating bark. The leaves are evergreen, alternately arranged, ovate to lanceolate, 1-25 cm long and 0.5-7 cm broad, with an entire margin, dark green to grey-green in colour. The flowers are produced in dense clusters along the stems, each flower with fine small petals and a tight bundle of stamens; flower colour varies from white to pink, red, pale yellow or greenish. The fruit is a small capsule containing numerous minute seeds.

Melaleuca is closely related to Callistemon, the main difference between the genera being that the stamens are generally free in Callistemon but grouped into bundles in Melaleuca.

In the wild, Melaleuca plants are generally found in open forest, woodland or shrubland, particularly along watercourses and the edges of swamps.

The best-accepted common name for Melaleuca is simply melaleuca; however most of the larger species are also known as paperbarks, and the smaller types as honey myrtles. They are also sometimes referred to as punk trees.

One well-known melaleuca, the Ti tree (aka tea tree), Melaleuca alternifolia, is notable for its essential oil which is both anti-fungal, and antibiotic, while safely usable for topical applications. This is produced on a commercial scale, and marketed as Tea Tree Oil. The Ti tree is presumably named for the brown colouration of many water courses caused by shed leaves from this species and other similar species trees, for a famous example see Brown Lake (Stradbroke Island)). The name "tea tree" is also used for a related genus, Leptospermum. Both Leptospermum and Melaleuca are myrtles of the family, Myrtaceae.

In Australia, Melaleuca species are sometimes used as food plants by the larvae of hepialid moths of the genus Aenetus including A. ligniveren. These burrow horizontally into the trunk then vertically down.

Melaleucas are popular garden plants, both in Australia and other tropical areas worldwide. In Hawaii and the Florida everglades, Melaleuca quinquenervia (Broad-leaved Paperbark) was introduced in order to help drain low-lying swampy areas. It has since gone on to become a serious invasive weed with potentially very serious consequences being that the plants are highly flammable and spread aggressively. Melaleuca populations have nearly quadrupled in southern Florida over the past decade, as can be noted on IFAS's SRFer Mapserver

The genus Callistemon was recently placed into Melaleuca.
